Bra-vissima Ladies choir and supporting the Noonan Syndrome Association

I was delighted and very touched to learn that my fellow choir members had chosen the Noonan Syndrome Association (NSA)[1] as the charity the choir will be supporting through concerts and fundraising events over the course of the next year.ย  Since learning that our youngest child (who is now two and a half) has Noonan Syndrome (NS), my husband and I have recently become more involved with the work of the charity โ€“ he as a trustee and I as a volunteer.

Noonan Syndrome is one of a family of genetic conditions known as RASopathies.ย  It has been described as โ€œthe most common rare disease youโ€™ve never heard ofโ€[2] and we certainly had not heard of it until our sonโ€™s diagnosis.ย  It is estimated to affect 1 in 1000 births.ย  Choir members may remember the concerns and scares we faced during my pregnancy and also the worrying period of time during our sonโ€™s first year of life when every doctor we saw knew that there was something wrong but could not tell us what.ย  In the absence (thankfully) of a heart condition and faced with problems that in isolation are not unusual in infants (poor feeding, reflux and vomiting, failure to thrive), it was only when we were referred to see a paediatrician and then a paediatric specialist, after a concerning set of blood test results, that the possibility of Noonan Syndrome was mentioned to us.ย  Subsequent genetic testing confirmed this to be the case.ย  From that point onwards things began to make sense as we pieced together the many parts of the puzzle.ย  We have since learned that NS is the most common single gene change to cause an increased nuchal thickness measurement on the 12 week anomaly scan during pregnancy โ€“ chromosome testing is normal in these cases and yet it is estimated that 1 in 10 of those โ€œnormalโ€ results will yield a genetic result of Noonan Syndrome.[3]ย  This is exactly where our story started.ย

Following this diagnosis we have been on quite a journey of educating ourselves about the condition and about the best way to support our son physically, socially and emotionally as he grows up.ย ย  This is where the Noonan Syndrome Association has been invaluable in providing guidance and education for families like ours, faced with a diagnosis that is often unfamiliar to many medical professionals and where there is no one clear โ€œroad-mapโ€ for management.ย  The nature of Noonan Syndrome is such that each individual is affected differently in breadth and severity, ย even where the genetic diagnosis is the same.ย  NS is a condition that has now been found to be associated with changes in any one of several different genes, each one linked to the RAS/MAPK signalling pathway.ย  In our sonโ€™s case, he did not inherit this condition, but rather a genetic change occurred sporadically (or De novo, which accounts for the majority or nearly two thirds of NS cases).ย  Noonan Syndrome (named after the cardiologist Jacqueline Noonan) was initially thought to be a condition defined by serious heart conditions combined with physical features such as short stature, but over the course of more recent years, while a large proportion of people with NS do have a heart condition, ย a much wider spectrum of symptoms have become recognised, which are often just as concerning for families and individuals.ย  The importance of having a team of medical and healthcare as well as educational professionals to monitor and support health and development in NS cannot be underestimated, particularly where early intervention can make such a difference.ย  We are lucky also to be able to attend a specialist clinic at Great Ormond Street Hospital, which is supported by the NSA.

Along with my husband, I am incredibly grateful to the choir for the opportunity to fundraise for the Noonan Syndrome Association and to raise awareness of this condition.ย  Singing has always been an outlet for me and singing with Bra-vissima has certainly played a role in getting through some challengingย  times over the past few years.ย  Our little boy and his big sister love music and singing too โ€“ something which always brings smiles to their faces and ours – ย so we canโ€™t think of a better way to support the charity!ย

Bra-vissima were honoured to take part in the Sunday morning Choral Eucharist and the Choral Requiem Eucharist to celebrate All Souls Day at southwark_cathedral. It was our first visit – we hope not our last. A day filled with remembrance, memory, the power of music and solemn dignified prayer. We also had in attendance during rehearsal an honorary Bra in the form of the Cathedral cat hodge_thecat who was also temporarily the Archdeacon of Lambeth. Our singing reached the hallowed spaces of every part of the Cathedral – a place where a 1000 years of history has been marked. What a sight.. what a sound.

Bra-vissima Sing for joy

On Saturday 29th June Bra-vissima Choir brought the joy of song and music making to an audience at Hutton and Shenfield Union Church. This summer concert was in aid of St Francisโ€™ Hospice and it was wonderful to have a representative of the organisation in attendance.

A varied programme of choral arrangements of traditional songs, poetry and contemporary pieces reflected the many ways in which music can bring joy to us all and a moment of respite from busy and sometimes stressful lives.

As a choir we all relish our weekly rehearsal as a time to escape and experience the joy of singing together and it is therefore a privilege to be able to share this with a wider audience at concerts throughout the year. This summer concert was certainly no exception.

We are now looking forward to a summer of music making together as we prepare to sing at Chelmsford Cathedral in early August and in Italy later that month.

No small thanks go to our musical director, Julia Wilson-James, for her time and commitment to challenging us to sing a wide repertoire of beautiful and varied choral music and instilling in us her joy and passion for music making!

Sing for Peace

Brentwood Cathedral – Saturday 23 March 2024

In this time of dreadful wars and uncertainty, we wanted to sing a concert full of peace and gentleness to show the kinder side of humanity. All the music was chosen to reflect these sentiments and hopefully to give us all an evening of respite from all the sadness and worry in our beautiful world.

Christmas comes to Bra-vissima

The Christmas spirit was well and truly upon us this past Saturday when Bra-vissima performed its annual Christmas concert to an audience filled with family, friends, and supporters.  Our broad programme included a selection of pieces from The Manchester Carols, a festive suite of music and singing which celebrates the birth of Jesus. Themes highlighting human endeavour, the divine made human, love for home and community brought home to us all the stark parallels to the many tensions and numerous conflicts that the world is facing today. A moving experience for all, bolstered by a violin and flute solo, a recorder duet and piano accompanist.

The second half, as is customary brought a lighter side to Christmas with renditions of Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer and a world premiere of The Twelve Dogs of Christmas – a humorous take on ‘The Twelve Days of..’ with rather a lot of canines involved. We were delighted to welcome a group of bell ringers who brought a whole new level of festive cheer to proceedings by accompanying the choir in This Endris Night and performing a Festive Round piece which made us all go Christmas fuzzy inside. With the end of the year fast approaching, we presented representatives of our chosen charity for 2023, Barrow Farm a cheque for ยฃ1750.00, an amount graciously accepted; andย Bra-vissima are now the proud sponsors of Nicco, a Harlinger pony.

Of course none of what we achieved on Saturday would have been possible without our leader in chief Julia Wilson-James who continues to push us so deftly to greater vocal heights – her enthusiasm, dedication, kindness, and patience is an inspiration to us all. To the choirโ€™s committee, ticket sellers, bar staff, mulled wine stirrers, clearer uppers – to our friends, family and many supporters – Merry Christmasย everyone.

Bra-vissima welcomed at Bury St Edmunds

Dear Friends
I have just had an amazing weekend as a follower of Ladies Choir, Bra-vissima.

They were singing at the Cathedral of St Edmundsbury under the leadership of Musical Director Julia Wilson James and accompanied by Stephen King.

The music was beautiful, especially the haunting โ€˜Be Still and Know I am Near Youโ€™ byย Michaelย Neaum.

If you would like the opportunity of hearing the choir, they will be at Chelmsford Cathedral on Sunday 22nd October.

Please join them!

A Visit to Barrow Farm

The charity that Bra-vissima are supporting this year is Barrow Farm Riding for the Disabled. As part of the coronation โ€œBig Help Outโ€, the choir gave a rather blustery al fresco performance at the Writtle Tea Rooms.

We were assisted by several little helpers; Isabella, Sophia, Eliza and Cleo shaking the collection buckets, and Kate page-turning for our accompanist.

We raised ยฃ406.19 which was particularly amazing given the inclement weather.

As a mark of thanks, Martin from Barrow Farm invited our little helpers to visit the stables and meet the horses.

The girls were all very excited and charmed by the horses who were all very well-behaved and calm.  They were able to see the tackle room, and learn about the work of Barrow Farm. It was a lovely afternoon, enjoyed by all.
